Martial Arts Uniforms: Karate To Kendo

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Leafing through a martial arts magazine, one day, I met a more vile outfit I’ve ever seen: a uniform set after the fashion of the U.S. flag. Stars, stripes, everything was there. I think the worst part of the image, and this makes you stay in my mind, is that man in uniform was running a football high side. Its location, most unfortunately, I have seen that while the uniform pants were mostly red and black, a blue field with white stars were used to create the horse. I have nightmares still.
Fortunately for everyone involved in the martial arts, this monstrosity is the exception not the rule. martial arts uniforms are often quite stark and simple package that gives the user a maximum movement and comfort. There are, of course, a variety of martial arts out there, and the name of the uniform varies not only by language, but my martial style. In karate, is shown as “karategi,” in aikido, as a “aikidogi-in tae kwon as a dobok”, “and so on.
Many of these uniforms are very similar in appearance, composed of losing, usually cotton pants with elastic waist and drawstring. The pants extend to the ankles and hang there, not elastic. The article of clothing is higher than the lower side wall and surrounds the body like a tunic, the sleeves are usually in the wrists. The garment is secured with straps wrapped on both sides and with a belt, while cotton, the color indicating the wearer’s rank.
While most martial arts uniform of this description are white, black is relatively common. In some schools, once a student reached the level of first Dan black belt, he or she is allowed to have a uniform or a black with a black border. In the U.S., it is common that the name and logo of a specific school of martial arts to be printed on the back of his uniform. This is especially true for those schools that compete in tournaments.
A notable exception to the above is uniform clothing frequently used by practitioners of tai chi chuan and kung fu. These dresses can be cotton, silk, but is often used as well. They can be any color imaginable. The pants are no different to those described above. The plan, however, is characterized by the frog buttons that often extend from top to bottom. In addition, the top usually has a traditional Chinese style neck, similar to what you might see on a cheongsam.
Perhaps even more dramatic martial arts is the one used in kendo. Kendo is the Japanese martial art of sword fighting. His attire includes long pants that almost looks like a skirt, a top similar to those worn armor protection in karate and Bagua, specifically designed. A set of Bagua is a mask, shoulders, chest protector, gloves, leg, groin and shin protection sometimes. A kendo fighter in full regalia, is a very intimidating place.
